The City and the Sights of Mons

 


The City of Mons,
is located 50km southwest of Brussels and is the Capital of the Belgian province of Hainaut

 

Established at the top of a hill, around a 7th century monastery founded by St. Waudru Mons has expanded over the centuries, outgrowing its fortified walls more than once, and engulfing surrounding communities.   The Cathedral dedicated to St. Waudru is now Mons' chief tourist attraction.

 

The central core of the town is not large, but runs in a number of rings. There is a concerted effort to keep vehicles out of the narrow streets, and parking regulations are strictly enforced.


The 
Canal du Centre, the E42, and the E19 all pass through Mons  and unlike some of the other towns in Belgium where one name is much the same as the other, the Flemish name for Mons is Bergen (both meaning "mountains").
